The reason is, people read from left to right. Most people ignore the ads on the very right because the listings on the very left and very top catch their attention first. It is also a good idea to target very specific keywords. Specific keywords are usually cheaper and the people searching with specific keywords are many more open to buy then those who are using a broad search term.
Placing banners on high traffic website related to the product you are selling can help bring customers on your site. It can be quite costly. But it can bring in a pretty solid amount of traffic if your banner is in the right place on the right website. Where is the right place to put a banner? Again, the closest to the top left you can get is usaully the best place to put a banner. What website is the right website to put a banner on? That depends on your site. Just ask yourself who buys your product and what other websites could they possibly be on? Finding a forum where your customers could be on is a great place to have a banner on as long as it is highly trafficed.
